Portfolio: The Fifth House & Creativity
Note: this is an installment in a series on how I combine astrology, Feng Shui and energy healing. SEE THE COLLECTION HERE.
What creates creativity? The 5th house contains all kinds of creation: recreation, procreation, co-creation. It describes how you feel the pleasure of newness and the style in which you offer your unique gifts to the world.
Earth sign creativity comes through the tangible and physical, creating rich, considered, substantive experiences.
Fire signs on the 5th offer up their gifts through action, getting attention through their example of how to be.
Water signs here can create feelings in others that reach new heights or depths of emotion.
Air sign 5th houses help us reconsider everything we thought we knew; they feel alive when producing original, visionary concepts.
Creativity in Feng Shui is found in the DUI gua, and in my home, there is a wall running through it, dividing the living room from the laundry room and bathroom; public from private. During an eclipse earlier this year, my 5th house of creativity was activated, and it became clear to me that this part of my life was divided in half as well.
On one side, it is well-supported by the flow of energy in my living room: a playful print by Corita Kent, a mirror with a rosy metal frame; numerous healthy plants, generous light pouring in and a low coffee table that makes a room with low ceilings more spacious.
The other side of the wall lacked such harmony: this northwest corner was a dim place of insufficient storage, odd leftover cabinets and poorly-chosen paint. The message seemed clear: one half of my creative self is very bright and confident; the other half contains some confusion and chaos.
To remedy, I painted over dark brown and mint green with a creamy white, refurbished old fixtures and replaced old cabinets. In doing so I noticed my creative endeavors - such as this portfolio - begin to take shape. I also encountered Shamanic Astrology and began applying its utilitarian arrangements to my life, especially as it refers to my moon placement.
According to Shamanic Astrology, the sign of the moon is the subject in which you "already have your phd". This can support you, but it can also be a trap that snares you in your addictive patterns from the past. Leaning into the creative prompts of the 5th house can help you overcome the ruts that appear when you're spending too much time in the comfort zone of your moon. The 5th house of creativity can break some old patterns by prompting innovation in your ways thinking, acting, feeling or being.
In light of this, I saw my multi-tasking Gemini moon reflected in the chaotic, unintentional palette of this space. It was telling me: you’re getting bored with getting bored. To break out of that old pattern and create something new, I decided to lean into the slow, tangible creative engine of my Taurus 5th house - a very different quality than my buzzy comfort zone, and a necessary shift. The upgrades to this part of my home are not complete, and that's fine. Taurus takes its time. Instead of thinking my way through this evolution, I'm experiencing it.
